Dr. Victor Fainstein

Biography:

Dr. Victor Fainstein was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He obtained his medical degree with high honors from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition, in Mexico City. He did his first fellowship in infectious diseases and microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Her second specialty was also infectious diseases at the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

He was Vice Chair of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Chair of Infection Control, and Professor of Medicine at Anderson Cancer Center for eight years. His career continued at Houston Methodist Hospital (HMH), where he has practiced for more than 30 years. He currently serves as Chief of the Infectious Diseases Department and Medical Director of Global Health Care Services at Houston Methodist Hospital. He is also a Professor of Internal Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and the HMH Institute of Academic Medicine.

Dr. Fainstein has published more than 125 peer-reviewed scientific articles, in addition to one book. He is a member of the editorial boards of several leading medical journals and has served as a consultant to the Pan American Division of Infectious Diseases of the World Health Organization.

He has been recognized for his teaching and academic knowledge, with accolades such as the Texas Medical Association Award for Scientific Writing, named HMH Physician Centennial. He received the HMH “John Overstreet Physician of the Year” Award for his unparalleled devotion to patient care and compassion. Dr. Fainstein also served as president of the HMH medical staff, as well as the Houston and Texas Infectious Diseases Societies at Houston Methodist Hospital. He was vice chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital.

His main clinical interests are the management of patients who have received organ transplants, cancer patients, nosocomial infections, care of patients with HIV-AIDS and, especially, quality of care and leadership of the medical staff.
